Rescue transport helps dogs make their way from high kill areas of the country to areas of the US and Canada where better animal welfare laws mean fewer animals in the shelters. This highly organized network of volunteers moves dogs from shelters and animal control facilities in the south (where shelter populations and kill rates are much higher) to the north/northeast US and Canada. Foster-based rescues receive vetted dogs and keep them in loving temporary homes until they can go to their forevers.
FOHCAS takes part in rescue transport as one leg of the journey. We participate in a transport route and move dogs from areas south of Hardin County (and some dogs from our shelter when possible) to a drop off point in La Grange, KY where they are transferred to drivers who continue their journey north.
We are always looking for drivers who can take dogs in our FOHCAS transport van (purchased through generous support from Hardin County Honda and other community friends) to the next stop on their “freedom ride” in La Grange on Friday afternoon. The typical time we need volunteers is around 1:30pm – 6pm on any Friday.
